Research Institute Ltd. Dol, CZ 252 66 Libcice nad Vltavou, Czech Republic www.beedol.cz | beedol@beedol.cz SERVICE PROPOSAL: RACIAL CLASSIFICATION OF BEES BY DAWINO METHOD - morphometrical analysis of bee forewings |
| Principal of the method: Bees of various races have different characteristics in forewings venation. The co-ordinates of 19 vein crosses in forewings are measured and 30 characteristics are computed from them, which numerically describe the whole wing design. These data are compared by discriminant analysis method (DAWINO) with known values of single races. Then the probability is computed with which the bee sample is belonging to each of these races. More details Description of the service: The customer sends a sample about 30 bees from each analysed colony to our laboratory. After analysing the sample customer gets a protocol with results. Results are sent only per post, printed on papers. We guarantee secrecy of your data and results. Atention! The service is performed especially in months IX. to IV. In case of analysis in summer season the delivering of results will be by individual agreement. |

| Booking of the service: Download the booking form: wingform.rtf (7.68 kB) You can send the order-form in advance or together with bees/wings samples. The method of collecting and preparing samples and a form for a sample are described below. |
| Method of preparing samples. Collecting bees: 1. In case of collecting samples in the season: Catch 30 young bees from a hive which are sure to originate from the colony (they have not flown yet), but no just after hatching from brood cells (their wings are still soft) and put them into a cage. Kill bees in a refrigerator. Then dry them. 2. In case of collecting samples in winter: Collect 30 dry, clear and not injured dead bees from the hive bottom board or catch live bees in the winter cluster. Put dead bees into a cage or small box or kill live bees as in case Nr. 1. Preparing samples: Snip the right-sided forewing from each dead bee as close as possible at the bee body as maximum venation were kept. Also it is possible to tear out the wing from the body by holding them between two fingers as they may not broken. Insert wings from one hive together into a small bag for they could not rumple and turn in the edge of bag and stuck with a piece of tape. The second possibility is to send whole bees with their wings, the best way in a small durable box stuck fixed with a tape. Bees cannot be wrinkled! Fill the form for each sample and number top right. Then write the same number on the bag or box. Pack collected samples, attach green, custom label on the envelope, and write: "Bee wings samples for research" and mail as a letter to the address: Bee Breeding Stn., P.O.Box 10, CZ 756 54 ZUBRI 909, Czech Republic. |
